Kobo Vox Review

Kobo Vox Review

Kobo is getting into the tablet market with their new Kobo Vox. It appears that they want their new Android Tablet to match up with the latest offering from Amazon, the Kindle Fire. It is a solid looking tablet and ereader, and it very well could end up being Kobo’s best offering yet.

The Kobo Vox is running on Android, although I have not seen the exact Android version it is on. I think it is fairly heavily modified version, but it does have access to the full Android Market, unlike the Kindle Fire.

The fact that it has the full Android Market will probably be it’s strongest selling point against the Fire. Many people are concered about buying a Kindle Fire, as they are afraid purchasing one of these ebook readers could cause them to miss out on some of the offerings that are not available as apps in the Amazon Marketplace.

A Few Specs -

  • 7 inch screen
  • wifi enabled
  • 8 gigs of RAM (expandable to 40)
  • 800 Mhz processor
  • Access books in epub format
  • Built on Android platform
  • Full access to the Amazon Marketplace

Kobo now boasts over 2.2 million ebooks in their marketplace, along with 1 million of those being free books, so they are gaining quite a market share in this area. They still are not anywhere near Amazon or Barnes and Noble in terms of book offerings, but there does now seem to be a third competitor in what has been mostly a Nook vs Kindle world when it comes to ebook readers.

The great thing about this device is it is much more than an ereader. It is truly a tablet at the same time. If you are looking for something to read on primarily but can also act as a tablet the Kobo Vox is worth a closer look.

The price is good, too, and the same as the current price for the Kindle Fire – $199 – and could make a good holiday gift, as they are coming out October 28th, and you can pre-order them right now.
